We visited Black Magic Canyon again during spring break.
We decided to explore some different parts this time.
From the kiosk off Magic Valley Road, we walked down to the canyon and went left.
It didn't seem like much at first, but then we started seeing some black rock...
The walls got higher.
And we found some cool rocks.
We came to a narrow, icy passage
Climbing up a small obstacle.
It opened up after a short while and
we turned around and headed back the way we came.
We stopped to photograph the rock people
by Mammoth cave on the way to the other part of the canyon.
We parked by the diversion dam
We crossed over the dam and took off to the right this time.
It opened up and flattened out several times.
Getting ready to enter a deeper part.
Cassie relaxing in a small cave.
Justin taking shade.
And Justin, again, looking through a hole
Climbing through an icy cave.
Heading back to the dam.
That's Garrett up on the dam waiting for everyone else to catch up.
We went around the dam and decided to go a short ways up the
section of the canyon that we went through last time.
This is the gang at the entrance.
It's a nice gentle slope into the canyon.
The first part is pretty open with few obstacles.
Then the fun part begins.
We all made it safely across this big patch of ice...
well, almost all of us.
Megan and Shane were the last ones to go.
Megan, mistakenly, let Shane go first.
There is Megan trying to figure out a way through after Shane broke the ice.
It was pretty deep.
Getting deeper. And although we encountered a lot
more ice patches, they all held firm.
Erika's cool rock find.
Just past this slit, there was an upclimb.
We turned around and headed back deciding that was enough for one day.
Shane (probably anticipating the broken ice passage)
climbed out and hiked back along the ridge.
Garrett and Megan were the only ones tall enough to make it across the broken ice passage.
I took the little kids up top and followed the canyon back to the car.
